Welcome to Spiderweb Salon's new creative adventure into the realm of the culinary! We are Caitlin Childs, Storie Cunningham, and courtney marie, and we're so excited to start sharing our semi-weekly early morning baking experiences and experiments with you via Wake & Bake! Stay tuned for special guests, nostalgic bakes, art-inspired creations, cooking workshops, and so much more. We'll officially launch this blog with our first recipe next Thursday (3/8) but until then, here's a little story of how this all got started.
As I scrolled through dusty corners of baking blogs with perfectly posed pictures of cakes... there it was. A black tower, adorned with honey-blonde battlements, just waiting to be seized. My feelings of fear and inadequacy started to build as I sat contemplating whether or not this war could be won. The Dark Chocolate Honeycomb Cake was a castle to be conquered. Reinforcements were called. The decision was made.
I had never baked anything so beautiful before. My relationship with the kitchen hadn’t even reached the level of being Facebook Official, but the willingness and support of my friends sent my confidence soaring to unhealthy heights.
I arrived at Caitlin’s home. She has the ultimate incubator for culinary potential: industrial strength Kitchen-Aid mixers, every type of baking utensil you could imagine, and an endless supply of wines and cheeses. Courtney sat at the kitchen table, striking the keys of her typewriter, sipping coffee, and working on Spiderweb schemes. Nervous butterflies filled my stomach like I was on a first date. These ladies were here arresting in their collective cool and I just rolled in with my awkward bag of ingredients, hoping I could get through the afternoon with some semblance of cake success and an intact ego. But the wine began to flow (it's 10 a.m., don't judge us), flour began to fly, and we banded together like warriors with a vast artillery, ready to fuck shit up.
Trials and errors and terrible (awesome) puns were made. We drank all the wine. Our battle was won.
Here it is. The delicious fruits of our labor. The mountain we climbed together. The splitting of the atom. With Caitlin’s incredible expertise, my insatiable desire for baked goods, and Courtney’s creative vision, Wake & Bake was born:
